[0]angry tapir writes "Using infrared sensors like the ones on television
remote controls, Texas A&M University students presented an
[1]inexpensive multitouch system at the Computer Human Interaction (CHI)
conference in Vancouver. 'I like to consider it an optical force field;
it's like a picture frame where we shoot thousands of light beams across
and we can detect anything that intersects that frame,' said Jonathan
Moeller, a research assistant in the Interface Ecology Lab at Texas A&M
University. The frame is lined with 256 IR sensors, which are connected
to a computer. When ZeroTouch is mounted over a traditional computer
screen it turns the display into a multitouch surface. Taken one step
further, if the screen is suspended then a user could paint a virtual
canvas."

At the ongoing [0]Google I/O conference in San Francisco, Google today
officially announced the [1]next version of Android, named Ice Cream
Sandwich, as well as [2]Android 3.1, an "incremental platform release" of
Honeycomb. An anonymous reader writes "In an effort to understand the
landscape for developers, Andy Rubin was asked if, since Ice Cream
Sandwich would be open, Android 3.0 and/or 3.1 will be granted the same
courtesy. Rubin [3]answered definitively in the negative. [4]Honeycomb on
its own would not be open, because its phone functionality is very
broken. Ice Cream Sandwich will take all of the Honeycomb functionality
and open source it alongside code that is much more universally
friendly."

An anonymous reader writes "Free software to support the RARv3 archive
format has been listed on the [0]FSF's High Priority Projects list for
some time now. We've always had ways to create and extract free archive
formats, using tools like GNU tar and Info-ZIP. The RARv3 format is
proprietary, so we don't want it to replace these tools, but it's not
uncommon to see it used for distributing multimedia files over the
Internet. That means the lack of free software to extract RARv3 files has
been sorely felt. We're happy to share the news that there's now a
[1]free software project to fill this gap, and we can mark this item as
done. [2]The Unarchiver is a small collection of software written by Dag

An anonymous reader writes "As an alternative to maglev trains, Japanese
researchers are working on ground-effect vehicles. A ground-effect
vehicle takes advantage of fast-moving air and uses some stubby little
wings to fly just above the ground, like a maglev without the mag. This
is a tricky thing to do, since you have to control the vehicle more like
an airplane than a train: you have to deal with pitch, roll, and yaw and
not just the throttle. A Japanese research group has built a [0]robotic
prototype of a free flying ground-effect vehicle that they're using to
test an autonomous three axis stabilization system."

adeelarshad82 writes "Scientists at UC Berkeley were able to shrink a
graphene optical modulator down to 25 square microns in size (small
enough to include in silicon circuitry) and were able to modulate it at a
speed of 1GHz. The researchers say that [0]modulation speeds of up to
500GHz are theoretically possible. According to the research, due to the
high modulation speeds, a graphene modulator can transmit a huge amount
of data using spectral bandwidth that conventional modulators can only
dream of. Professor Xiang Zhang, in an attempt to boil his group's new
findings into consumer-speak, puts it this way: 'If graphene modulators
can actually operate at 500GHz, we could soon see networks that are
capable of petabit or exabit transmission speeds, rather than megabits
and gigabits.'"

donniebaseball23 writes "As the PlayStation Network outage continues,
developers are feeling the economic pinch. There's been no word from Sony
on whether they'll compensate companies who produce games for PSN, but
Capcom has already said it's [0]losing potentially 'millions' from the
downtime. Worse yet, developers who rely on PSN revenues may jump ship if
they aren't compensated, warns Dylan Cuthbert, creator of popular PSN
game PixelJunk. 'I have a feeling they [Sony] are thinking about doing
something [1]or they will lose developers, which of course is pretty bad
for them,' he said." While a major shift away from the PS3 is unlikely —
downtime or not, developers don't want to lock themselves out of such a
big piece of the market — it does have undeniable negative effects on
some companies. For example, Bethesda's FPS Brink, which focuses heavily
on multiplayer, launched without that capability for PS3 users. You can
bet Microsoft will use this outage as a selling point for exclusivity or
Xbox-first arrangements.

blackbearnh writes "We all know by now that Test Driven Development is a
best practice. And so is having 100% of your code reviewed. And 70% unit
test coverage. And keeping your CCN complexity numbers below 20. And
doing pre-sprint grooming of stories. And a hundred other industry 'best
practices' that in isolation seem like a great idea. But at the end of
the day, how much time does it leave for developers to be innovative and
creative? A piece on O'Reilly Radar argues that [0]excessive process in
software development is sucking the life out of passionate developers,
all in the name of making sure that 'good code' gets written. 'The
underlying feedback loop making this progressively worse is that
passionate programmers write great code, but process kills passion.
Disaffected programmers write poor code, and poor code makes management
add more process in an attempt to "make" their programmers write good
code. That just makes morale worse, and so on.'"

[0]RickJWagner writes "Watch out, System Admins. The floodgates to
BlackHat Hackerdom are now open. Packt Publishing has just released
BackTrack 4: Assuring Security by Penetration Testing, a how-to book
based on the freely available BackTrack 4 Linux distribution. The intent
of the book is to educate security consultants on the use of this
devastatingly complete Hacker's toolkit, and to provide sage words of
advice on how to conduct yourself as a penetration testing consultant. On
both counts, the authors do well." Keep reading for the rest of Rick's

hydrogen fueling station in the town of Torrence in Southern California.
Shell wasn't alone in this project as Toyota also helped them in this
green deed, all of which was funded by the government. At the moment
other hydrogen stations around the US still depend upon trucks to supply
them with fuel. This marks a new era of green fueling and hopefully this
pipeline spreads to other stations. Many of the big car makers like
Toyota, Honda and Mercedes have indicated a mass market for hydrogen
powered cars by 2015."

LordStormes sent in a link to an article about a new device that may
allow dolphins to finally thank us for all the fish. Denise Herzing,
founder of the Wild Dolphin Project and Thad Starner, an artificial
intelligence researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology in
Atlanta, have been working on a project called Cetacean Hearing and
Telemetry or CHAT. The pair hope that CHAT will allow them to "co-create"
a language with wild dolphins, [0]allowing the two species to communicate.
From the article: "Herzing and Starner will start testing the system on
wild Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in the middle of this
year. At first, divers will play back one of eight 'words' coined by the
team to mean 'seaweed' or 'bow wave ride,' for example. The software will
listen to see if the dolphins mimic them. Once the system can recognize
these mimicked words, the idea is to use it to crack a much harder
problem: listening to natural dolphin sounds and pulling out salient
features that may be the 'fundamental units' of dolphin communication."

[0]itwbennett writes "'Ice Cream Sandwich', that is. Apparently it's
source code delay week, as Google joins Apple in [1]delaying the release
of source code for open source licensed software. Except, unlike Apple,
which promptly [2]released the LGPL WebKit code in question Monday
afternoon, Google stated yesterday that it will not release the source
code for Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) until after the release of the next
version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich). This is not necessarily news,
since Google said last month that source code would be [3]held for an
indeterminate time and released when it was ready. It's just that now
'indeterminate' has an actual date: post-launch of Ice Cream Sandwich.
The question, says blogger Brian Proffitt, is: 'How the heck can they do
this, given that Honeycomb is licensed under the Apache Software License
v2?'"

+--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[0]Hugh Pickens writes "The Atlantic reports that President Obama's
decision to withhold the visual evidence of Osama bin Laden's death has
created a fundamental disagreement between the White House and the
Associated Press, one of the largest journalism organizations in the
world, prompting the news organization to [1]file a Freedom of
Information Act request for the bin Laden photos. 'This information is
important for the historical record,' says Michael Oreskes, senior
managing editor at The Associated Press. 'That's our view.' AP's FOIA
request includes a reminder of the president's campaign pledge and a plea
to be more transparent than his predecessor. 'The Obama White House
pledged to be the most transparent government in US history,' writes the
AP, 'and to comply much more closely with the Freedom of Information Act
than the Bush administration did.' The AP isn't alone in wanting more
insight on the specifics of the raid. When it eventually surfaced that
bin Laden was not killed in a firefight, his wife wasn't used as a human
shield, there was no live footage of the event and the 'mansion' where he
lived was only worth between $250,000 and $480,000, many [2]became
skeptical of the White House's narrative. Other organizations that have
filed FOIAs include [3]Politico, Fox News, Judicial Watch and Citizens
United. Oreskes sympathizes with the president. 'This is obviously one of
his most difficult decisions and we understand that.'"
